If you're reading this, you've probably already started thinking about what goes into your family's home — the cleaning products, the personal care items, the supplements. And if you're like many of the families in our Wellness Wise Hive community, you've started wondering: what about my pets?

It's the right question. The same drive toward lower-toxin living that led you to essential oils and organic wellness applies just as meaningfully to the animals who share your space, breathe your air, and lie on your floors. Here's what you need to know.

Can Pets Benefit from Essential Oils?

Yes — with the right approach. Dogs, cats, horses, and other animals have been shown to respond positively to carefully selected, properly used essential oils. The key words there are 'carefully selected' and 'properly used.' Animals process aromatic compounds differently than humans do, and their heightened sense of smell means that what seems like a subtle scent to us can be overwhelming to them.

The most important thing to understand: let your animal guide you. An animal that moves away from a diffuser or turns its head from an oil is telling you something. Respect that response. The goal is to support their wellbeing — not override their instincts.

Introducing the Young Living Animal Scents Line

Young Living developed their Animal Scents collection specifically for pets — pre-diluted blends formulated for animals' more sensitive systems, with no synthetic fragrances, no artificial additives, and no ingredients that shouldn't be near your animals.

The line includes:

T-Away

For emotional support and calming. Especially beneficial for rescue animals, pets adjusting to change, or animals that struggle with anxiety during storms, travel, or separation. Contains a calming blend that helps promote a peaceful, settled feeling.

ParaGize

Formulated to support healthy digestion in pets. Applied topically to the abdomen (diluted) or diffused. Contains Ginger, Anise, and Peppermint — a gentle, supportive combination.

RepelAroma

A fresh, protective blend that helps keep pets comfortable outdoors. Contains Citronella, Idaho Tansy, and Palo Santo — designed to deter common outdoor nuisances while smelling genuinely pleasant.

PuriClean

A brightening, balancing blend for use as part of a grooming routine. Supports a fresh, clean feeling after outdoor adventures. Contains Mountain Savory, Palo Santo, and Rosemary.

Infect Away

Supports the pet's natural cleansing systems and helps maintain healthy-looking skin. Often used as part of a three-step skin support routine.

Mendwell

A grounding blend specifically formulated to support skin health in animals. Pairs beautifully with PuriClean and Infect Away for comprehensive topical support.

Animal Scents Shampoo

A plant-based, conditioning cleanser that leaves coats soft and smelling naturally fresh — no synthetic perfumes, dyes, or harsh chemicals. Infused with Geranium and Lavender for a gentle, calming wash.

Animal Scents Ointment

A soothing, protective salve with Tea Tree and Myrrh. Applied externally to moisturize dry skin, soothe minor irritations, or support healthy paws and coat.

Pet Dental Chews

Formulated with essential oils including Peppermint and Spearmint to help support oral hygiene naturally. The ridged design helps reduce buildup between vet visits.

Safety Guidelines for Essential Oils Around Pets

Before we go further, some important safety information:

Cats

  • Cats are significantly more sensitive to essential oils than dogs — their livers lack certain enzymes needed to process some aromatic compounds

  • Avoid high-phenol oils (Oregano, Thyme, Clove, and Cinnamon) around cats entirely

  • Citrus oils should be used with caution or avoided around cats

  • When diffusing, always ensure cats have a way to leave the room

  • Never apply undiluted oils directly to a cat's skin or fur

  • The Animal Scents line is formulated with cat safety in mind — stick to these products for cats

Dogs

  • Dogs can tolerate a wider range of essential oils than cats, but still require dilution and careful introduction

  • Dilution ratios by size: small dogs (9:1 carrier to oil), medium dogs (4:1), large dogs (3:1)

  • Introduce any new oil slowly — apply to your own hands first and let your dog sniff it at a distance

  • Never apply oils to eyes, inside ears, or on mucous membranes

  • Pre-diluted Animal Scents blends are always a safer starting point than undiluted single oils

Diffusing Around Pets

  • Always diffuse in a well-ventilated space with an exit available for your pet

  • Use shorter diffusion sessions (30 minutes on, break) rather than continuous operation

  • Avoid diffusing phenol-heavy oils (Oregano, Thyme, Clove) in rooms where pets spend time

  • Watch your pet's behavior — a pet that leaves the room, yawns excessively, or shows discomfort is responding to the oils. Respect that signal

  • Lavender, Cedarwood, and Peace & Calming are generally well-tolerated for diffusion around dogs

Creating a Low-Toxin Home for Your Pet

The good news is that if you're already transitioning to non-toxic cleaning products and organic wellness practices for your family, you're already creating a healthier environment for your pets. The floors they walk on, the surfaces they lick, the air they breathe — all of it is impacted by what you use to clean and maintain your home.

The Thieves Household Cleaning line — including the concentrated household cleaner, dish soap, laundry soap, and more — is entirely plant-based and leaves no toxic residue on surfaces. That matters when you have a dog that walks across a freshly mopped floor and then licks his paws. It matters when you have a cat that grooms herself on a freshly laundered blanket.

Switching your cleaning routine is one of the most impactful things you can do for your pet's long-term wellness — and the Thieves line makes it genuinely easy.

A Note on Young Living's Animal Welfare Commitment

A portion of every Animal Scents purchase benefits Vital Ground, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the habitat of grizzly bears and other North American wildlife. It's a small but meaningful reflection of the values that run through Young Living's work — a company that has always seen its mission as bigger than a product line.
